The Department of Mathematics and Physics is the oldest department at the university with an established team and well-established traditions. The beginning of the department is connected with the organization in August 1939 on the basis of the Kostanay pedagogical school of a two-year teachers' institute. One of the departments created was the Department of Physics and Mathematics. After the transformation of the Teachers' Institute into a pedagogical institute in July 1955, the Department of Physics and Mathematics was divided.

The Department of Physics was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences A.V. Mishchenko, and the first head of the Department of Mathematics was Yankelevich G.R.

As part of these departments worked Candidate of Technical Sciences G.N. Ostapenko, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences V.N. Chenets, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences V.M. Poezzhalov, Candidate of Technical Sciences N.V. Matveychuk, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences A.V. Tregubchenko, docent V.N. Novikov, docent Professor L.I. Graduates of OP "Mathematics" can be found in higher and secondary educational institutions, banks and insurance companies, financial and government structures. For example, the head of the Department of Education Shek G.G., Vice-rector for Academic Affairs and STO of KSU Mayer F.F., rector of Chelyabinsk State University Pryakhin G.N., a leading specialist of the city administration Zhaksybergenova M. and many others.

Graduates of OP "Physics" work in many industries, agriculture, communications, education and scientific institutions, for example, V. Goffman, now a Doctor of Chemical Sciences, works at the Saratov University named after Yuri Gagarin, Puntus L.N., Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Head of the Department at the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Many graduates successfully work in education and business.

Currently, more than 200 highly qualified graduates work in Kazakhstan, Russia, Germany and other countries. In addition, graduates of the specialty "Mathematics" work at the department - associate professor Utemissova A.A., senior teachers Ryshchanova S.M., Berdenova G.Z., Nurgeldina A.E. and many others. and the specialty "Physics" - senior teachers Dunsky M.M., Orazalinova D.K., Martynyuk Y.P., teacher Bermagambetova Z.S., Zhandarbekova A.M., etc.

In March 1979, the Crystal Physics Laboratory was established and launched. The rather complicated and expensive problem of growing single crystals of good optical quality and large sizes at that time was solved in two or three scientific centers of the USSR. Currently, the research work of students is a mandatory component of the educational program of vocational training and is aimed at the formation of general cultural and professional competencies in accordance with the requirements of the State higher professional education in the field of training of the OP "Mathematics" and OP "Physics".

Students of OP "Mathematics" and OP "Physics" take part in annual scientific and practical conferences of students, in the Republican competition of research of students in natural, technical, in Olympiads held in universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the near and far abroad. So in 2010-2015, students took an active part in Atameken Starnup competitions, where they took leading places with prizes of 500,000, 200,000 and 100,000 tenge. Students of OP "Mathematics" in 2018 participated in the International Olympiad in Mathematics, which was held in Urgench, Uzbekistan.  At the Republican Olympiad in physics in 2010, students of the OP "Physics" took 2nd place. At the Republican Contest of Inventors in 2013, V.M. Poezalov took second place with a prize of 1,000,000 tenge. All the prize money was spent on updating the material base of the department.

Students of OP "Mathematics" and OP "Physics" study at the military department in the specialty "Organization of communications in the ground forces". The training is carried out under a state grant for both boys and girls.  Upon graduation, graduates receive a military ID and the rank of lieutenant.

Within the framework of international cooperation, the department closely cooperates with the Magnitogorsk State Technical University named after G.I. Nosov (Russia), with the Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy), etc.
